MTS approaches Visitor Management like any other security solution – from a policy perspective. We emphasize developing and institutionalizing a security policy that defines the threats and vulnerabilities and evaluates the organization that will use the solution before any system design is made. With visitor management, it is imperative to understand the traffic flows of visitors within an organization, develop and document the rules for dealing with visitors, and then incorporate those rules into the visitor management workflows. This ensures our solutions meet the needs of the organization and can properly be used by the individuals within the organization.
Visitor management is actually a subset of facility access control and accounts for persons within a facility that fall outside of those traditionally managed by the access control solution. The two systems must work together hand-in-hand and combined, account for all persons within a facility. MTS also recognizes the need to take into account common sense and traffic flow such that a visitor management system fits within the organization’s image of accommodating visitors and also recognizes that not all decisions can be solved with technology. As such, it is imperative to understand – and define – how security and facility personnel will interoperate within the context of visitor management.
As a reminder, if all access points are not managed, then you do not have full access control. However, we recognize that a fully managed facility may not be cost effective. We take into consideration other access control methods including traditional door locks, physical key management, and having video surveillance as a layer contributing to the awareness of the state of any egress point – or all egress points.
